There was A BIG, Social Media David and Golith, fight about between Frankie’s and Woolworths on Twitter & Facebook about the term “Good Old Fashioned”. I only caught the end of the fight on 702 of all places (yes I listen to 702, hand me the zimmer frame) when the CEO of Woolworths was on admiting defeat and that he would go above and beyond retracting the tag line, he would be retracting the whole line of products from the shelves.
Another example of the growing power and influence of social media!
Who would have thought that the underdog, Durban based, Frankie’s Olde Soft Drinks, would take on Woolworths and succeed.
On April 15, Frankie’s sent a letter to a Woolworths’ supplier indicating it considered the phrase its advertising property. Despite being aware of the claim and the fact that other phrases were considered for the products, Woolworths continued to use “Good Old Fashioned” on its vintage cold drinks.
The ASA found Woolworths “deliberately and intentionally copied the phrase”.- SAPA
